Mixtapes Are the New Demos

Written by: reyshizz

Demos are a thing of the past. A demo (the sense that I’m using it) is sample recordings of your work that you would create to hand to executives for a chance to get signed. Back in the day, let’s say before the Internet was popular, the only way to really have a chance was to shop your demo around to DJs and A&Rs. If they weren’t feelin’ you, you were dead in the water. But now you can create a Mixtape using your home computer and the Internet to gain popularity amongst the music listeners.

A Mixtape is an album on a budget, a very low budget. It’s made for the people who listen to music as apposed to the gatekeepers who sell music. The great thing about a Mixtape is that you do not need to go to a studio to record it. It’s becoming more and more easy and affordable to create quality sounding music from your bedroom (I do it all the time). There was a time when you could not get a good sound unless you paid a professional to record in a studio. Today all you need is a computer, some basic software and a mic and you’re good to go. Also, distributing your Mixtape is as easy as posting a zShare link to your Myspace, Facebook or Twitter account. If you need a site to put your music, you can go back to Myspace and set that up.

Sidebar — Due to the fact that makin music has become so easily accessible, everyone and their momma are trying to put something out there. Needless to say there is a lot of garbage out floating around. Please do not add to the garbage and make good music!
