Step 1 – Concept & Create Music

Back in March 2010, I decided to do a Hip-hop Tribute. The idea was simple: write and record a track a day AND, on top of that, I would use instrumentals of tracks that were made from 1979 to 2009. The plan was 31 tracks in 31 days. Due to a minor hiccup, it ended up being 31 Tracks in 29 days. I’m just glad to say that I pulled it off.
Step 2 – Review and Critique

I can’t deny that Drake took the rap game by storm when he came out with his mixtape So Far Gone. One of my favorite songs on that mixtape was Successful featuring Trey Songs. I figures this track would be great to cap off my Hip-hop Tribute.

Kick push was Lupe Fiasco’s first song with commercial success. The first time I heard it I became an instant fan. The beat is very majestic so my flow on this track is as such. Check it out.

I have to give props to Lil’ Wayne on my Hip-hop Tribute. He made a bold statement with the song Best Rapper Alive, making a claim to the thrown of rap. Since then he been consistently banging out hits. I take this track and do something a little creative with it. Let me know if y’all catch it.

The next instrumental track I use on my Hip-hop Tribute is Jay-z’s Lucifer. The beat on this track is sick. When it came out in ’03 it was one of my favorite tracks on the Black Album. I had a lot of fun writing and recording this track. Take a listen.

The next track I use on my Hip-hop Tribute is 50 Cent’s Wanksta. When this track came out it was hot to death. This was probably the first 50 Cent track that had commercial success. 50 Cent was known for taking other people’s tracks and adding his flavor to it. I figure why not do the same to one of his tracks. Enjoy.

This next track needs no introduction, but I’ll do it anyway. Xplosive was on Dr. Dre’s Chronic 2001 and was easily one of the dopest tracks on that amzing album. So I definitely had to do a verse on it for my Hip-hop Tribute. I had a lot of fun with this one. Take a listen and let me know what think.

Mobb Deep has many classic beats to choose from. I picked Shook Ones for my Hip-hop Tribute because I was feeling it most around that time period. On the original, Mobb Deep is talking about fake wanna be thugs (you know gangster shit) but I went in a different direction. My version is more melodic and I even do a little singing at the end. Enjoy.

The song Summertime by Will Smith was great feel good music in the early 90′s. Because of this it earned a spot in my Hip-hop Tribute. In my version I maintained that feel good vibe throughout the song. It’s something chill to smooth out with. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Rakim Allah, the God MC. I would’ve had to shoot myself in the face, twice, if I didn’t do a Rakim track in my Hip-hop Tribute. He was the game changer back then with his style and metaphors. He came correct on every song and Paid in Full was no exception. So I definitely had to do my thing on my version and of course have fun while doing it. Take a listen and let me know what you think.
