Beauty is NOT in the Eye of the Beholder and NOT Skin Deep (part 2)

December 24th, 2007 · 5 Comments

In the book, “Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters” the authors talk about the characteristics that make a person beautiful. What they found was that facial beauty is a matter of how much the left side of your face is symmetrical to the right side (bilateral symmetry). People without symmetrical facial features are ugly (sorry it’s the truth). The main argument against this theory is that our social up bringing decides what we find beautiful and ugly. But a study with 1 week old babies showed that when the babies were presented with two pictures (an ugly person and a beautiful person) the baby gazed at the beautiful person longer. Which is empirical evidence that proves some people are born universally unattractive and universally beautiful.

Oh, before I forget, please comment. I'd like to know your thoughts.

Forget about the facts and studies… what if I tell you that what we find pretty or ugly only has to do with the culture we are in.

    Or

What about the fact everyone has different tastes, someone will always be pretty to some else no matter how ugly someone else think they are?

    in response to “Jessie”:
    1) what is culture?and why?
    2) hmmm, so reverse: will someone be ugly to someone else, regardless of how pretty someone else thinks they are? (and this is notwithstanding attraction, personality, or anything else than the person’s looks.

My point is - there are people who are universally beautiful, regardless of culture and taste.

PharaohAnkh, I would go one further and say there are people who are universally UGLY, regardless of culture and taste.

    PharaohAnkh:

Culture! Everyone has their own definition of culture however anthropology defines culture as something that is learned from others while growing up in a particular society or group, it’s something that is shared and it profoundly affects the thoughts, actions and feelings of the people in that group.. Therefore individuals are a product of their culture… What I meant by saying that what we find pretty has to do with our culture is….what you are attracted to (male or female) has to do with what you were ‘taught’ was pretty and what wasn’t pretty… for example many people in different regions in Africa (the country) believe that in order to be considered pretty the women have to be large or fat.. If they are skinny they are not attractive… where in North America to be large or fat is almost considered a disease…Big girls are constantly reminded that their weight is a problem and that they should look more like the beautiful ones, the ones on TV or in the magazines!!! Even for body parts; breast aka boobs for most guys they are nice and they like them so much etc.. Because in a way they were taught yet again to like them but in certain part of the world they are only seen as a way to feed babies and not as something sexual!!!! And I could go on and on…What I believe is that culture has a lot to do with several different aspects of your life, like the way we see things and what we find pretty or not !! :) And to be honest with you I don’t think it’s necessarily true that some people are universally beautiful or ugly (as rey put) it!!!!

And for number two: everyone has different taste and it really can’t be argued.. you like big butts he likes small ones.. he like black girls you like Latinas.. you like long toes.. he likes small toes.. she has a thing for freckles.. I can’t stand freckles (It’s not true but you know what I mean…)
