Today I was in my hood driving downtown when I saw, what I assumed to be, a family of three. The mother and father who couldn’t be older than 22 and daughter looked about 3 years old. I assume everybody in the hood is broke or just getting by ’cause I know that’s how I’m living and how my family has been living. So I assume this little family can’t be well off for three reasons 1) they’re young 2) they’re in the hood and 3) they’re waking. That’s the norm where I’m from. But being away for a while and coming back I see things differently. What surprised me about this couple was gear they had on. All three of them, mother, father, daughter had on North Face coats, gloves and hats. I know how expensive that stuff is so I’m pretty sure that they couldn’t afford it. Then I looked down at the North Face logo on my gloves and jacket and thought, “I can’t afford this shit either. Why do I have it.” After closer observation I noticed that the dude had on red monkey jeans and some Jordan’s on his feet. The combination of the North Face red monkey and Jordan’s had to cost at least $1000. Now I’m pretty sure he could’ve done something else more productive with that $1000 but he chose to be fly fresh to def. What’s sad about that is I would make the same decision.

How did we get this way? How can we change?

Oh, before I forget, please comment. I'd like to know your thoughts.

hmm, could this possibly be a spin off to the last post referring to materialism and how we think we should buy these things?

I will take it as girls have it more easily when it comes to fashion because no one is TRULY looking at her in what brand she is wearing, as long as she is cute and doesn’t look like a vagabond. I can’t even answer this properly because I believe it’s all about budgeting and I wouldn’t spend my money on no Red Monkeys. I complain when I see the price of Rocwear jeans.

But I believe it is due to these rap videos. Like you said, what better promotion would ANY marketer use? A celebrity. We are so influenced especially young teens that are marketable. Even working for the mag, I see the type of ads for CLOTHING like House of Dereon bombards us but that’s because they know we can get their attention and I am sure it works.

I agree… gorilla marketing to “urban” communities may be the prime reason why we’re like this…

    Hey Reynald,
This is just what Kanye West sang about when he said “and the white man gets paid off of all of that”…..the cycle of poverty continues because so many people in depressed neighborhoods don’t have any financial education, so as soon as they get money, it is spent immediately. And there are also plenty of ways to get cheap and/or fake name brands.
